CPR Vikings 2 v 1 Aldershot B&G
The continued bad weather resulted in a kick off and venue change as Frimley Lodge was deemed unplayable so the game was switched to Connaught with kick off time put back 30 mins. With Connaught a flurry of activity due to all the other age groups training we finally got the set up and cleared for the visit of Aldershot B&G. Having played Aldershot B&G only two weeks earlier we were familiar with their squad and knew to expect a hard battle.
As has happened on a couple of other occasions this season, the Vikings got off to a tremendous start. In only the 2nd minute Giorgio played the ball out of defence up to Thomas on the left of midfield, Thomas passed inside to Sam and continued his run down the line to receive the return. Thomas then passed inside to Cameron who controlled the ball neatly before switching the ball wide to Barney who had made a great run into the box and made no mistake in slotting neatly past the keeper to make it 1-0 and a definite contender for goal of the season. The Vikings continued to push forward and a minute later Sam had a great effort saved by the keeper of which Barney reacted quickly but his shot went just over. Aldershot created their first attack soon after with a long ball forward that Callum and Giorgio were glad to clear to safety. The game had started at a really frantic pace with the Vikings threatening again with Barney finding Thomas who’s cross was deflected for a corner. Some good movement in the box by the Vikings but Aldershot managed to clear. When Aldershot did attack it was pretty much direct with long balls out of defence causing our defenders problems as they had two forwards routed in the Vikings half who were both working well off each other. Jim was called on a couple of times to gather through balls which were made more difficult by the sun which was directly in his face. On 10 mins Aldershot were awarded a free kick just outside the box and although the Vikings wall was well constructed some clever play by an Aldershot striker obstructing Jim on the line gave him no chance to get to a tidy shot which fired into the top corner, 1-1. The game continued to ebb and flow from end to end with the Vikings creating the better chances but Aldershot always looking dangerous when they attacked. Jim nearly turned provider when a long kick was flicked on by Sam to Cameron who’s shot went inches wide. Another good passage of play from the Vikings resulted in Sam firing in a cross which Thomas controlled before firing against the underside of the bar before bouncing on the line. Was it in or not, if only the Russian linesman was on hand, but Aldershot cleared and the ref waived play on. The awaiting subs were introduced with Charlie, Daniel and John replacing Callum, Sam and Thomas. Charlie was in the thick of the action straight away as another good move by Barney and Cameron fell to Charlie but his shot went just over. With the game evenly balanced Aldershot nearly took the lead on the stroke of half time when an Aldershot player picked up a clearance from Jim and hit a long range effort towards goal only to see John covering at the back and clearing off the line. The ref blew up for half time and the half time oranges got their weekly mauling while the coaches said their stuff.
The second half started similar to the first with the Vikings creating an early chance where Daniel saw his shot well saved by the keeper with Cameron following up to knock just wide. A couple of minutes later and more pressure this time saw Daniel shoot wide. As was the case in our recent encounter against Aldershot the Vikings really got on top in the second half and the early signs were that this game was going to be no different. Another chance for the Vikings saw the Aldershot keeper first save a shot from Charlie before again denying Cameron who was quick to follow up. Aldershot then pushed forward and were awarded another free kick deep in the Vikings half. Having fallen victim to some tactical shrewdness the Vikings were keen not to be caught out again. With the wall in place and an Aldershot striker blocking Jims view Giorgio neatly used his body to nestle the striker out of the way therefore allowing Jim to gather the well taken kick. That was the ‘stuff’ the coaches had mentioned at half time so good to not only see the boys were listening but also to see it come into fruition. The Vikings then returned to peppering the Aldershot goal and it looked like it was going to be one of those days. Cameron had a fine shot tipped over the bar then more good play saw Daniel have another shot blocked. The Vikings remained patient and continued to pass the ball about neatly with Thomas, Charlie and Daniel combining well but Aldershot were defending in numbers. With Aldershot thinking they had cleared their lines a good foot-in by Thomas saw the ball land at Daniels feet just outside the box. Having seen a couple of fine efforts already saved in the second half he controlled the ball beautifully before firing an unstoppable shot high into the top left hand corner, 2-1. Aldershot pushed forward again but good work in defence by John and Callum extinguished the threat and allowed the Vikings to attack once more and win a corner. Callum pushed forward for the corner and having positioned himself well just outside the box picked up the clearance and shot just wide. In the final minutes Sam took a curling corner which rained into the box and ran along the front of the cross bar before going to safety. The whistle blew to end a really well contested game.
Aldershot definitely caused us a few problems today with their style of play but the lads adapted well, listened and continued to play to their own strengths which brought about a hard but well earned victory.
Another good performance boys !.

13 February 2010 10:00 - Aldershot Town Reds v CPR Vikings |
|
Aldershot Town Reds 0 - 0 CPR Vikings
Maybe it was playing in the shadow of Wellington’s statue, one of England’s finest leaders on the battlefield, that gave our Vikings that extra strength and purpose on a freezing cold morning in Aldershot. Or maybe it was the rousing team talk by one of England’s lesser-known generals (The Duke of Cooperville), that drove an extra steely determination into the hearts of the Viking warriors. Whatever it was, you could sense through the warm up and up to the kick off that the lads were really up for this encounter. And what an epic performance we were about to see unfold.
Having more than matched the Reds for large parts of the game in their previous league outing, a 5 minute lapse of concentration was punished by 3 quick goals with the Reds running out 5-1 winners. There was clearly a score to settle, and although we had turned them over in a Christmas tournament, the Reds went into this fixture as the only team with a 100% record following 11 straight wins in the league.
From the whistle it was clear that there were going to be no passengers in the fixture. Tackles reigned in hard from the off and midfield pace and urgency was immediately called for. Sam took up the mantle of working hard to close down the Reds’ midfield play maker and had the best of the early exchanges. The Reds threatened early down the Vikings’ left, but the cross was comfortably dealt with by John who stayed calm under pressure to thread a ball into Sam. Turning his marker Sam released Callum and some great interchange play between the two of them saw a low shot from Sam smothered by the keeper.
Aldershot were quick to counter and some good passing enabled them to get in behind the Vikings defence momentarily before Giorgio battled back to get in a timely tackle and John to finally clear the ranks.
With 5 minutes gone Aldershot won a throw-in deep into the Vikings half. From the throw they managed to win the first corner of the game. There was good movement from the Reds from the corner and a well floated cross saw the Reds’ connect with a header that thankfully flew wide of the Vikings’ goal (although Jim looked relaxed as he had it well covered).
As the game settled down from break-neck to mere frenzy, one could only admire the guts and determination that was driving the Vikings on and on. No ball was being given up on, marking was tight, and most of all, the lads were taking no nonsense and giving as much as they were taking in a physical but fair encounter.
With neither side managing to penetrate either defence for a good ten minutes, it took a long ball from Sam into Barn to drive the first opening since the start. Holding up the ball brilliantly, Barn laid off to Callum who found Sam. A lovely move was snuffed out by some solid Reds’ defending demonstrating why they have the best defensive record in the Premier league.
Undeterred the Vikings began to up the ante, and with Charlie, Sam and Callum combining well in midfield, Barn was finding more space and putting in some great runs that started to stretch the defence. As the Vikings began to get upper hand, a good ball from Giorgio set Charlie free down the left which turned into a corner.
Sam played one in to the near post that nearly caught the Reds defence asleep only for them to scramble clear for another corner. A beautifully flighted cross fell into a morass of bodies around the penalty spot, and as the ball deflected clear John latched onto it on the edge of the area releasing it wide for Sam to cross again. Recovering well a defender’s leg prevented the ball coming back into the danger zone and the ball was out for a third consecutive corner. The crowd were beginning to defrost nicely as the heat of battle in the Reds’ penalty area was becoming too much to handle. Again a perfectly flighted cross from Sam went over two heads and dropped tantalisingly for a Viking to volley home. Unfortunately a resident mole got a nose to it first and it bobbled over the Viking boot and through the legs of a second Viking before rolling into touch.
It was time for the first round of substitutions and Callum, Charlie and John took a well earned break and made way for Cam, Luke and Thomas.
The lads immediately picked up the pace and the Vikings continued to pressure with the Reds still looking dangerous on the counter. Both teams were giving their all with most of the football being played out in the midfield battle. An Aldershot corner was well defended and as the ball broke clear Sam drove forward and found Barn who again held up the ball well before threading through to Cameron who switched it back inside to Sam. Cutting inside Sam unleashed a shot that was partly blocked and eventually gathered by the keeper.
Half time 0-0
Well – what could be said at half time after an absolutely fantastic first half showing. If it could be bottled and sold then tomorrow Rodney we’d be millionaires. Not much to say to the lads other than more of the same, but it was important to keep that fire in the belly. So notwithstanding, Coach Colin turned to another English leader for inspiration, and in the words of Henry V offered some guidance to the boys along the lines of …. “Straining upon the start, the game's afoot: follow your spirit, and upon this charge cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'”
And so, once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more did our fearless Vikings take to the field. In sooth, ‘twas fine …. (ok …give it a rest and get on with the match report – ed!).
Ok. Sorry. Back to the action.
The second half started where the first half left off with the pace of the game unrelenting. Yet despite that, the technical quality of play was, for me anyway, the best I have seen from the Vikings all season.
A tightly fought first 5 minutes saw neither team assert themselves, but this was more than a game of attrition. Some good movement from the Reds was countered with lovely flowing passing from the Vikings.
It took a strong tackle from Luke and good pace and awareness to release the Vikings right midfield and after great work out on the right with Sam and Cameron, the ball was driven into the Reds box where the keeper had come off his line to intercept. He could not hold on to the ball however and Thomas was onto it like terrier and managed to beat the keeper to ball only to see his strike roll agonisingly wide.
Once again the Vikings began to take control of midfield and were certainly dominating possession and territory. !0 minutes into the half and again some good work through the centre by Sam and Callum saw the ball ricochet back to Thomas whose first time shot proved to be just too high.
Another great break from defence by Luke saw him combine well with Cam who moved wide and managed to force a corner.
Another dangerous corner from Sam was only half cleared by the defence but as the ball swung into the danger zone it drifted over for a goal kick.
The Reds continued to look dangerous on the break and a speculative shot from distance was hit hard and could have given Jim a lot of trouble. Instead he gathered brilliantly as the ball stuck to his chest like tabloid stories do to half of Chelsea’s defence( (sorry Colin).
With final substitutions made it started to look like the match was destined to end in stalemate. However, with 4 minutes remaining the Vikings worked some good passing from defence with John finding Cameron who quickly released Charlie. Cutting inside and working the ball into the box, an almighty goal line scramble ensued with the ball eventually finishing in the keeper’s arms. A quick kick down field put two Reds in behind defence for a moment, but good tackling back from John and Charlie forced the ball out for a corner. The corner was dealt with but the Reds continued to press and started to pressure the Vikings for the first time for a while.
Forced to play a little deeper the Reds went in search of something from the game and with less than 2 minutes to go the referee awarded a freekick just outside the Viking’s area. Thankfully the wall was good and the Vikings again cleared their lines.
With the clock ticking down the Vikings were seeing out the closing moments defending hard. A good cross into the Vikings’ box was half cleared, and as the ball fell to a Reds’ midfielder he slid a ball into the left which was struck first time only to cannon off the right upright. Whilst it frightened the living daylights out of the coaches and supporters, tried to reassure the crowd that there was nothing to worry about as he had it covered.
Final score 0-0
What a game. Not often you can say that about a 0-0 result and was probably a fair result. Both sides created chances and on balance we probably had more possession and certainly played more of the game in the Reds’ half.
The coaches were immensely proud of all the lads and joined the parents in awarding both man of the match and player of the week to the entire team. Absolutely top class performance lads – let’s take that passion and desire into next week’s fixture against the other Aldershot team! |

06 February 2010 10:30 - Aldershot B&G v CPR Vikings |
| Aldershot B&G 0 v 3 CPR Vikings
As we all arrived we all asked the same question, where on earth the pitches came from mounds ‘r’ us. As Steve inspected the pitch that we were playing on Colin allocated positions and subs who were John, Barney and Sam.
The match started at 10:30 with Aldershot to take centre ball and as the whistle blew immediately the boys got stuck in for the tackle we managed to get possession but Aldershot weren’t going down with out a fight. After 2 minutes Aldershot managed to grab a free kick directly in front of the goal but our immense wall intercepted the ball and we took possession. The Vikings managed to weave the ball through the mid field of Aldershot and Cameron managed to cross the ball into Thomas and Thomas took a shot, unfortunately it went wide.
For a while the possession was 50/50 but we were working better with the ball and were using it well. Then after a while Dan managed to tackle the ball from the midfield and give a beautiful pass into Charlie on the wing. Charlie received the ball and made a dash for it up the line, Charlie managed to get a shot on goal but unfortunately it missed.
Throughout both teams were good at battling for the ball. Charlie and Thomas were working well together as were the whole team. When Aldershot had the ball Dan managed to make a brilliant tackle but as he attempted to pass the ball but was unfortunately intercepted they managed to make a dash for it and took a shot on goal but luckily Jim saved it.
The match carried on and Aldershot managed to get another free kick but still our wall was invincible and once again blocked the ball. But Aldershot got the ball and took a shot on goal luckily due to the Vikings sturdy defence its was kicked away.
Both teams had really upped their game and really put in the effort. We managed to weave our way into Aldershot’s box and there was a massacre of Vikings and Aldershot players and after a big scrabble we unfortunately weren’t able to grab a goal. Thomas and Cameron worked very well as a team.
Cam made a run up the line and made a cross into Thomas and it was an unfortunate miss.
At 10:47 we made a substitution John, Barnaby and Sam went on and Cam, Dan and Callum came off. Aldershot managed to weave the ball through the defence to take a shot and due to Jim’s brilliant goalkeeping he made a brilliant save. Thomas managed to get the ball and race up through midfield and through defence to take a shot on goal. Their goalkeeper managed to save it. We had a corner and our mini mid fielder Sam took the corner he made a beautiful cross into the box and Thomas managed to get a touch on the ball but it wasn’t quite there.
Aldershot managed to get back and Luke and John stood strong in defence and wouldn’t let anything pass.
Thomas and Charlie took control with excellent passes around players. Again we were unsuccessful at grabbing the goal we longingly need.
Thankfully due to the immense power of the team bringing everything they learnt they all came together and Thomas shot that goal in the back of the net, 1-0. Only minutes later the whistle blew for half time.
After an inspiring talk from Colin and Steve, Paul gave his weekly lecture on stuff.
The whistle blew and we got the centre kick off and both teams weren’t going down without a fight. Charlie was in there with a tackle and the ball made its way to Barnaby. Thomas had yet again another try and was very unlucky and missed
John and Sam were good at battling we got a free kick and John decided to take it and as he stepped up a rush ran through the body and he struck the ball it flew through the air.
As the ball flew back and fourth up and down the pitch the spectators stood on the sidelines not only shivering with the bitterly cold breeze they were shivering with frustration although we were winning we needed another goal.
As the teams were battling it out on the pitch the coaches were shouting their phrases' especially the spectators were listening out for the switch of Antonio, Saturdays switch was “sweeeeeeeche”……a classic.
Again with another few shots on goal from Sam again no goals scored.
With the time nearing 11:10 we made our third substitution with Charlie, Thomas and Luke coming off Cam, Dan and Callum went on to fight for the last few minutes.
The whole team had lifted their chins and were ready to put all they had into the rest of the game. The Vikings defence seemed to be impenetratable
Aldershot kicked the ball out to a corner and again Sam took it. And as the ball gracefully curved round Aldershot gave us a goal by scoring an own goal, 2-0.
With great play from the whole team. Daniel took a shot and it shot over the crossbar. Again another shot from the Vikings went over the crossbar.
With Aldershot still pressuring our defence John wasn’t moving it was tackle after tackle.
With our midfield and striker attacking Aldershot’s defence Cameron managed to smash the ball into the back of the net to make it a solid 3-0 to the Vikings. Only seconds after the whistle blew for fulltime with the cat in the bag a 3-0 victory to the Vikings.

30 January 2010 12:30 - U9 Cup Quarter final - CPR Vikings v Rushmoor Saints |
|
U9 Cup Quarter Final
CPR Vikings 1 v 0 Rushmoor Saints
The Vikings returned to cup action for their eagerly awaited game against Rushmoor who at the start of the morning were sitting pretty at the top of Div 1. On arrival at Lightwater for a 10.30 kick off, things weren’t looking to good as one of the goal mouths and the centre of the pitch looked like it was ready to host Dancing On Ice. Both teams decided that the pitch wasn’t playable but with the sun beating down intensely everyone agreed to put the kick off back to 12.00. Both teams dispersed hoping we could get the game on. On arriving back at Lightwater at 11.30am the pitch was inspected again and still deemed unplayable. With everyone really up for getting the game on a quick phone call to the club house to check on pitch availability and a 12.30pm kick off was agreed on pitch 6.
The game started at a frantic pace and you could tell in the opening minutes that this was going to be another tough cup encounter. The Vikings first attack saw John push forward and knock a lovely ball out wide to Cameron who took a couple of touches before seeing his shot blocked for the Vikings first corner. Rushmoor cleared and ventured off on an attack of their own. Giorgio was having to be alert at the back as Rushmoor demonstrated good movement off the ball whilst enjoying some good possession. A couple of corners were well cleared by the Vikings in which we did look dangerous on the counter attack with Cameron finding lots of space on the right of midfield. With Sam working tirelessly in the middle of the park it was his pass that found Cameron whose shot went wide. A run by Sam looked to have breached the Rushmoor defence but as he a last ditch tackle just inside the box saw the ball go out for a corner and Sam having to be replaced by Daniel having picked up a nasty knock. It really was a ding dong battle in midfield and Charlie was having to track back when needed. Rushmoor created a couple of chances in quick succession one shot going wide and Jim making a great save. The Vikings finished the half strongly and nearly took the lead on the stroke of half time with Giorgio passing to Charlie who played a diagonal ball to Cameron who this time saw his shot shave the outside of the post.
The lads were told at half time to maintain their concentration levels and keep up the work rate they had showed in the first half so as to pen Rushmoor in their own half.
The Vikings started the second half as they finished the first with Giorgio, Sam, Callum and Cameron combining well with another shot going inches wide. Luke had replaced John in defence and was hungry for anything that came his way with a number of fine tackles that flawed Rushmoor every time they attacked. When they did manage to breach our back line Jim was always on hand with some brave goal keeping and great handling. Although the Vikings were enjoying more possession we were not managing to create to many real chances as Rushmoor defended resolutely. Thomas was back on up front and picked up a loose kick from the Rushmoor keeper before seeing his first time effort go wide not realizing he had more time. From the goal kick Rushmoor played the ball out of defence but this time Daniel made up ground to cover the danger. We began to put Rushmoor under more pressure with us winning a succession of throw-ins down the left flank when the ball broke to Luke who delivered a lovely ball into the box. Thomas put the keeper under some pressure and the ball fell nicely to Callum who buried the ball into the back of the net, 1-0. With only 3 minutes of normal time left the crowd watched nervously as Rushmoor piled everyone forward having won a free kick. The ball was delivered into the box but a combination of good marking and awareness saw the ball fall at Jim’s feet who gathered gratefully. The Vikings seemed to up the tempo by chasing down every ball even harder than before knowing victory was insight. Having teased us on a couple of occasions the ref finally blew his whistle and the Vikings could celebrate.
The Vikings had beaten a really well organized Rushmoor side who, although currently in Div 1 will surely be a premiership side next season. We really showed how strong we are defensively, with some outstanding performances from Giorgio, John, Luke and Jim but more importantly we showed a stealth of team spirit today which was what won the day.
Well done boys, a tremendous team performance.

23 January 2010 09:30 - CPR Vikings v Wey Valley |
|
CPR Vikings 4 v 2 Wey Valley Warriors
With it feeling like we’d had a longer break than the normal close season everyone was chomping at the bit to get back playing again so didn’t want to have another game called off due to the weather. With a quarter of the pitch threatening to put the game in jeopardy Giles was busy forking the pitch to remove the surface water as the ref carried out a pitch inspection. It was a bit touch and go but the ref agreed the game could go ahead much to the relief of both teams.
Although it was some time ago the boys were told to carry on from their last encounter where two late goals earned a well deserved point and boy did they duly oblige. With the Vikings kicking off, a couple of neat passes in midfield saw Daniel thread a beautiful pass through to Callum who slotted the ball neatly past the keep, 1-0 with barely 30 seconds on the clock, what a start !! The lads continued to play some great football with Barney and Charlie combining well down the left which the Warriors were grateful to clear for a corner. Daniel took the corner and Luke made a great run to the far post and headed just wide. Minutes later another corner from Daniel was this time flicked just wide of the near post by Charlie. The Warriors looked threatening when they went forward and on 10 mins won a free kick just outside the box. With the Vikings being a bit hesitant in organizing their wall Jim was grateful to see the ball go high and wide for a goal kick. The Vikings were looking well organized and were using the width of the pitch as much as possible so as to utilize the better surface. Barney received a through ball out wide but the Warriors keeper made a good save by intercepting a cross which was destined to find Charlie. Up the other end the Warriors won another free kick in a similar position to the previous one. This time the Vikings were regimental in organizing a wall and Luke was on hand in defense to block the ball and clear. Unfortunately the ball fell to a Warrior who hit a long range shot through a medley of players which sailed into the top corner of the net, 1-1. The Vikings continued to enjoy to majority of possession and spent most of the time in the Warriors half. More good football in midfield by Barney and Charlie caused problems in the Warriors defense and Callum was working well on the right with some great runs. On 17 mins some good battling by Barney created a chance for Daniel whose shot went wide. Sam, Thomas and Giorgio were introduced to replace Daniel, Callum and Luke respectively. With the Warriors threatening down the right both John and Giorgio combined well to keep out the threat which gave the Warriors another long range effort on goal. This time however Jim made a great save and pushed the ball to safety. With the Vikings attacking once again, Thomas threaded a neat pass through to Charlie who rushed into the box to knock the ball around the onrushing keeper who couldn’t help but bring Charlie to the ground. The ref pointed to the spot and the medical team attended to Charlie who had picked up a nasty knock. Sam stepped up with a well taken penalty to restore our lead, 2-1 and Charlie was replaced by Daniel as unfortunately he couldn’t continue. With half time fast approaching the Vikings continued another spell of pressure and won a corner. Sam delivered to the near post and the keeper was glad to concede another corner. This time a perfect delivery to the penalty spot was met by the onrushing Thomas, who rose like a Salmon with a bullet header into the top corner which brought the crowd to their feet with his dad 20ft up in the air, 3-1. The half time whistle blew with the Vikings on fire.
The Warriors kicked off the second half and nearly made an identical start to the Vikings in the first but Jim was on hand to make a fine save. The warriors definitely had no intention of giving up and a couple of minutes later worked a quick short corner which resulted in another good effort from long range which Jim again saved magnificently. With the Vikings now attacking the heavier end of the pitch it was always going to be more difficult to play the passing game we played so well in the first half. The midfield trio however were working well and Sam made a good run down the left but no one could get on the end of his cross. A minute later more good football saw Thomas find Barney who then found Sam whose shot was saved. The Warriors were definitely enjoying a bit more possession than they did in the first half and John was having to work his socks off to clear a number of attacks. With the Vikings defending well the Warriors were being limited to long range chances but with their players having fierce shots on them we were grateful for Jim again to turn another shot wide. Giorgio was also having a great game at left back with a number of well timed tackles that had the Maldini touch about them. With the Warriors on the attack again, a neat through ball saw Jim race of his line to make another miraculous save at the feet of their striker and get injured at the same time. More patching up by the medical team got him back on his feet but a minute later he had to come off as he couldn’t continue. With Luke just about to come on, he ended up donning the keepers gloves and jersey while Jim hobbled to the sidelines to join Charlie. Callum came back on in midfield and Thomas pushed upfront while Barney took a well earned rest. Although both teams were tiring due to the heavy conditions it was still a great contest with both teams giving it everything they had. Daniel had a long range effort saved and Thomas also saw a shot saved having received a through ball from Sam. More good pressure by Callum who was battling well in midfield managed to find Barney who buried a shot past the keep to increase our lead, 4-1. A couple of minutes later, the Warriors keeper saved another threatening Vikings free kick and unleashed a long clearance up field. With the Vikings tiring to get back their striker had a one on one with Luke and took their opportunity well, 4-2. Although there was only a matter of normal minutes left there was still about five minutes of ‘fergie time’ to be added on due to the injuries. This increased further as Sam limped off the field having picked up another knock with Barney replacing him for the dying minutes. With the full time whistle imminent Callum did manage to get another shot on goal which went just wide.
The whistle did go to wrap up a fine win against a good Wey Valley side who we have enjoyed a number of great games with over the past couple of years.
Well done boys, a real outstanding display !

12 December 2009 10:30 - CPR Vikings v Manor Colts Black |
| CPR Vikings 2 -2 Manor Colts
“The shafts of morning sunlight broke the tree line to light up the dew on the meadow that makes up arguably the best pitch in North East Hampshire”. Well that was my opening line from the last time we played Manor Colts. Alas, those ‘shafts of morning sunlight’ were replaced by a grey menacing sky complimented by a pitch that hours earlier can only have been inhabited by the local cattle!
Somehow the game went ahead despite having to fish a number of players out of the swamp during our warm up. It’s unusual to see supporters blowing for the final whistle before kick off, but we’re a hardy bunch and soon after the ball rolled off its centre puddle, the volume and intensity took over.
From the early exchanges it was clear this was going to be a game of real attrition. With conditions akin to the Battle of the Somme, the Vikings made their presence felt with some early strong tackles. Manor Colts began to just shade early possession and it took a great tackle by Luke to arrest a threatening move down the Viking’s left flank in the second minute. Quickly re-grouping the Vikings kept their shape and set up a lovely flowing move in the third minute with Sam crossing into the Colts’ area only for the keeper to parry. With the danger not cleared Dan combined with Sam who rifled in a shot from range that the keeper again did well to save.
The Colts immediately countered and a great move tested the Vikings’ defence who were alert to the danger with Luke and John combining to snaffle out the threat.
With 7 minutes gone the Vikings won their first corner. The cross was whipped in from Sam and just eluded the tips of the horns on top of the Vikings’ helmets that they weren’t wearing (ok – it was just too high)!
Some great interchange in midfield between Sam and Callum was causing untold problems for the Colts defence who were now very much on the back foot. Still dangerous on the break however, the Colts were quick to move the ball out of defence and convert to attack. Playing fairly direct football they created an opening on 12 minutes that saw Jim racing off his line like a gazelle in full flight to gather at the feet of the centre forward.
The game was really beginning to open up and the level of skill and accuracy of passing was amazing given the testing conditions. Callum continued to terrorise the Colts left side, but the Colts were dangerous on the break often choosing to shoot from range. Then, on 17 minutes, the Vikings, unable to fully clear their lines, lost the ball in midfield. A quick pass inside to the Colts’ centre forward gave him space to turn, and with good skill he managed to fend off a couple of challenges before unleashing a shot that gave Jim no chance. 0-1.
Perhaps against the run of play, but the next 8 minutes saw an evenly balanced game unfold. Callum took a well earned break after some inspirational runs down the right and never-say-die tackling. The Vikings made a couple of substitutions allowing Giorgio and Barnaby to apply a fresh pair of legs to the game.
With less than a minute to go in the first half, the Colts worked the ball fairly directly out of defence and set up a move down the middle. Luke did well to push the forward wide but as the attacker tried to force himself into the area, the challenge was adjudged to be too strong, and also in the area (although the pitch markings had submerged somewhere between Frimley and Brisbane). With a penalty awarded on the stroke of half time, things were looking a little grave. Jim, who up to this point had maintained a 100% record on penalties so far this season (due in part to the fact that he hadn’t faced one yet!), set himself for the kick. As the ball was unleashed at blistering pace towards goal, Jim sprouted a surprise tail, four legs and whiskers before tipping the ball onto the bar and then gathering the rebound. The Vikings went wild and even the referee seemed to want to applaud a great save, but unfortunately his hand was not in the air to salute such dexterity, instead to indicate that the penalty needed to be retaken because of ‘encroaching’ into the area by one of the Vikings. Would there be more heroics or were the Vikings simply doomed to go into half time two down.
Bosh! The ball left the centre forward’s boot arrowing to the corner. Jim looked relaxed as he waved goodbye to the ball as it struck the outside of the post and wide. Never in doubt Jim and half time 0-1.
The boys didn’t need much building up at half time as they were clearly buoyed by Jim’s save and in fairness justice was done to be honest. Colin reminded the lads that we were playing a tough team but that we were playing the best football and had been really solid across all positions – more of the same.
Into the second half and I have to say I haven’t seen so much mud since I went on a day trip to Western-Super-Mare in 1972 with my ma and pa.
Despite the increasingly more difficult conditions, the Vikings stuck to the task as strongly as the ball stuck to the pitch. Luke made an awesome tackle to break down a dangerous move on the right. Dan and Giorgio combined well before Giorgio unleashed a fantastic shot that looked destined for the net only for the keeper to make a great save. The game was really ebbing to and fro with the Vikings playing the more attractive and stylish football, but Manor Colts always looking dangerous on the break with their more route-one approach. Defensively we were holding firm with John making another great tackle to prevent any breach of the back line. Very few chances were falling to either side as the game moved into a midfield pitch battle, and then, from a rather innocuous ball out of defence, the Colts midfield found a little space and hit a speculative shot from range that bobbled and found the bottom right hand corner of Jim’s goal. 0-2.
It just seemed to be one of those days but the lads were far from ready to surrender, and going two down seemed to catalyse the entire team into raising their game. From the kick off Sam set off on a mazy run before laying off to Barnaby who cut inside to switch to Cameron. The ball was crossed and only half cleared and the Vikings looked hungry for revenge. Suddenly there was more width developing as Cameron and Giorgio moved out to the wings. There was almost a cup tie feeling about the game now and it was the Vikings who looked like the side most likely to score a goal. However, with three minutes to go and time running out it all seemed like it was too late. Notwithstanding, as the Colts tried to work the ball once again out of their left side defence, Barn took off in pursuit of what looked like a lost cause. Wrestling the ball away from the defender, Barn’s tenacity paid off as he rounded the second defender and made his way into the box before squaring back to Thomas who despatched the ball into the back of the net. 1-2.
With less than two minutes to go the Vikings were clearly not going to lie down. Straight from the kick off Sam was at the foot of the Colts’ midfielder faster than my Auntie Doris’ Jack Russell on a table leg. With the player quickly dispossessed Sam worked the ball wide to Giorgio who played it into Thomas. Working the ball back across and switching the play, Cameron picked up possession and set off down the line. There was real fire in the belly of the Vikings now and again the tenacious spirit paid off as Sam and Cameron combined to get behind the defence before the ball again came back across the box for Cameron to pounce first and equalise. 2-2.
The crowd went wild (well I know I did which no doubt means I will be cited again for over-enthusiasm but who cares …. Christmas just came early!!).
We were now into time added on and the kick off resembled more of a start line in a 100m final. As soon as the whistle blew three Vikings left the blocks faster than Usain Bolt. It could’ve been a car crash but the flailing limbs were all Colts as they struggled to cope with the now fully resurgent turbo-charged Vikings. Back to their pillaging best, the Vikings surged forward with the Colts mere rabbits in headlights. Fantastic football down the left saw us win a corner immediately. Sam ran over to take it conscious this could be the last kick of the game. As the ball sailed over all heads it dropped tantalisingly to Giorgio who had found space at the far post. The ball bounced awkwardly in the quagmire and whilst it would’ve been tempting to apply the ‘hand of Henry’, Giorgio rightly elected to try to convert within the rules. Unfortunately, having lost his footing in the swamp, he was forced to try and ‘nose’ it over the line which gave the keeper just enough time to scramble and retrieve. All the coaches were on the pitch too to apply the finish but realised that this might’ve been frowned upon and quickly beat a hasty retreat.
And with that move came the final whistle. What excitement. What drama. What a game. The beautiful game (on a truly awful pitch).
Final score 2-2.
Two draws from playing Manor Colts this season doesn’t tell the full tale. The boys were truly outstanding in this game against a well organised and drilled Colts team who have only lost once all season. A tough decision again on star performers this week, but Jim deservedly picked up the supporter’s man of the match with the Coach’s player of the week going to Callum. The coaches were immensely proud of all the lads. Fantastic – well done! |

05 December 2009 10:00 - U9 Cup 3rd Rnd --- CPR Eagles v CPR Vikings |
|
CPR Eagles 1 v 2 CPR Vikings
With the 3rd round draw pairing the Eagles and the Vikings it wasn’t the draw either team really wanted but did make for an exciting morning down at Connaught. With all the thrills of a cup tie and derby game all rolled into one, on the Eagles favoured Connaught venue, it was a surprise that Sky wasn’t on hand with their cameras to show as the lunch time kick off.
The game started at a frantic pace with the Vikings creating the first chance with a neat passing moving giving Sam his first sight at goal but Zak was on hand to save. The Eagles fought straight back and it wasn’t long before they created their first chance with Jim saving a shot from George. We knew the Eagles would be up for the game and they didn’t disappoint as they ensured the Vikings did get any time on the ball. With the Vikings also challenging every ball in midfield the first part of the game was played at a ferocious pace with no real chances being created. On 7 mins the Eagles did manage to find some space down the left wing with Harry managing to get in a cross into a crowded Vikings penalty box. As the ball was half cleared a shot from the edge of the box was fired in through a medley of players and nestled into the bottom left hand corner sending the home fans ecstatic, 1-0. Not sure who had got the final touch but think George had claimed. The Vikings continued to play their passing game and nearly hit back straight away when Cameron delivered a lovely cross from the right to the on rushing Charlie whose shot went inches wide of the post. The Eagles pushed forward again and John got his head in the way of a long range shot which he was grateful to see Jim push over for a corner. The huge crowd were all watching anxiously as the ball continued to be contested fiercely in all areas of the pitch in a tremendous spirit. The Vikings then enjoyed a spell of possession with Cameron meeting a corner with his shot going just over midway through the half. With both keepers showing their strength with their drops kicks Jim nearly ended up on the score sheet as a long kick eluded everyone including the Eagles defense with Zak pleased to see trickle wide for a goal kick of his own. Daniel, Callum and Luke were introduced and immediately settled into the pace of the game. With Callum pushing forward from midfield he managed to get in a shot that went narrowly wide. Barney was working hard up front and done well to win a corner from which Callum again nearly scored from a fine delivery from Daniel. On the stroke of half time the Vikings produced a fine move through midfield which Barney then knocked out wide to Charlie but the final ball was intercepted and the half time whistle blew.
Both teams had a well earned breather before the game restarted with the Vikings getting off to the perfect start. Good play down the left and a decent delivery into the box resulted in Barney getting a touch to send a looping ball onto the bar which then dropped onto the far post and somehow scrambled over the line as the Eagles desperately tried to clear, 1-1. This spurred the Vikings and although the game continued at the frantic pace of the first half they began to create some better chances. With the game finely in the balance any ball into the opposing half sent either set of supporters to their feet knowing that the next goal would be crucial. With the Vikings winning another corner from some more attacking play a lovely ball from Charlie just eluded Callums head and ran across the goal for a goal kick. More pressure from the Vikings this time saw Ryan block a shot from Charlie with Callum then following up with another shot that went wide. Although the Vikings were eagerly pushing forward they had to be resolute at the back with the Eagles pushing forward whenever possible. Luke and John however were both on hand when needed to clear any danger. When the Eagles did however manage to breach the back line Jim was on hand with a good display of handling to extinguish any threat. On 32 mins Barney went on a mazy little run beating two players to shoot from the edge of the box but Zak was on hand to save. More pressure followed from the Vikings and the ball this time fell to Sam who managed to create a yard before getting his shot away which drifted wide of the right upright. Another couple of chances fell to Cameron and Daniel respectively but dogged defending by Jacob and Ryan ensured the score remained level. With time ticking by and only about 5 mins left on the clock the Vikings won another corner which was well delivered into the box and similar to the opening goal cleared to the edge of the box where Luke had held his position wonderfully to hit a cracking shot through a crowded penalty box into the bottom right hand corner, 1-2. With not long to go the Eagles continued to push forward and won a free kick just outside the Vikings penalty box. Lewis pushed forward and lined up a shot but the Vikings wall done its job stifling out the danger. The dying moments saw Sam knock a lovely through ball to Cameron which was cleared to safety and then another long kick by Jim was met again by Cameron but Zak saved.
The full time whistle blew to end a thrilling encounter with the Vikings going through into the draw for the next round.
The spirit in which the game was played was a credit to both teams and they have all come such a long way since they used to huddle round that ball back in the Nippers.
Well done fellas !

28 November 2009 11:00 - Liphook Utd v Vikings |
|
Liphook Utd Wildcats 4 v 0 CPR Vikings
The Vikings travelled to Liphook looking forward to a tough encounter against two teams who were level on points.
The pitch was heavy but well playable and the Vikings started strongly with Daniel going on a fine run down the left flank and although outnumbered by three opponents still managed to win our first corner of the game. From the corner, Charlie made a good run to the back post and managed to get a good connection on the ball which the keeper somehow scrambled along the line before coming to rest between the keeper and the post. A few minutes later another attack saw Sam cross to the far post where Giorgio hit a shot that went wide. The Vikings were enjoying plenty of possession against a strong Liphook side who looked really threatening on the break with a tall centre forward willing to run for anything. Jim was called into action for the first time on 8 mins when he gathered a shot from just outside the box. The Vikings continued to work hard in midfield with Daniel, Sam and Charlie all contesting every ball and coming away winners on most occasions. Thomas was up front being marked tightly by two defenders but managed to get on the end of a long ball forward to hook a shot just wide of the post. It was then the Vikings turn to show how regimental they can be in defense with Giorgio using his strength to clear a Liphook attack and then Daniel chasing back resolutely to slide the ball clear. When Liphook did breach our back line a minute later, Jim was quick off his line and managed to be first to the ball with a lunging tackle just on the edge of the box (magnificent clearance Jim). With John working tirelessly and looking to attack whenever possible the Vikings were really working well together and playing some really nice football at times. Another good spell of possession by the lads produced a couple of chances before the break. Firstly Thomas got on the end of a corner but his shot went narrowly wide and then Sam battled relentlessly pass a couple of Wildcats before seeing his well struck effort saved by the keeper. With half time fast approaching there was time for one more chance which saw Daniel bravely get his head on a Sam corner but the ball just flew over the bar.
Not too much to be said at half time apart from keep it tight at the back, watch out for the counter attack and keep playing the way the lads had been playing.
And so they did, Callum went on a tantalizing run down the right flank, leaving two Wildcats in his wake and continued pressing into the box shrugging off another defender on his way but was unfortunate to see his effort saved. Barney was now up front and making himself available every time we pushed forward. The Vikings where then reminded how dangerous Liphook could be on the break when a direct ball from midfield released their centre forward but was forced to hurry his shot as Jim was again quick off his line. As the striker got a toe on the ball to prod it past the on rushing Jim we were fortunate to see the ball just go wide of the post. More relentless pressure from the Vikings resulted in us winning a number of corners which Liphook were really struggling to clear. Midway through the half it looked like the Vikings had finally got the goal they deserved when the Liphook keeper palmed out a ball which Charlie managed to scramble over the line only for the ref to blow up for the keeper to receive treatment following a fairly rough landing. Another corner, another fine cross, a great run from Charlie and a header that skimmed the top of the bar. The supporters were looking at their watches thinking time was going to run out totally unaware of what was still to come. With 7 mins left Liphook broke on another one of their attacks and this time managed to get the killer blow with a shot just inside the post, 1-0. The Vikings kicked off and immediately lost possession in which we were punished again with another low shot into the corner of the net, 2-0. This to be fair took its toll on the lads having gone 2-0 down in 30 seconds in a game that they had enjoyed the majority of possession. Liphook were flying now with them getting a new lease of life following their two quick goals and in the dying few minutes were gun hoe as they not only created but also converted another two chances, 4-0.
The full time whistle blew with all players and supporters from both sides wondering what they had just witnessed in the last 5 mins. Fair play to Liphook as it just shows what a funny old game football can be if you don’t manage to take your chances.
Although disappointed by the result the lads can again be proud of their performance as they continue to play some cracking football and work effortlessly as a team.
Although we didn’t get the result another good team performance fellas !

21 November 2009 10:45 - Vikings v Beacon Hill Chargers |
|
CPR Vikings 4 v 0 Beacon Hill Chargers
The Vikings arrived at Lightwater with the chance to catch up with the Trojans who had the earlier kick off on pitch 1. It was noted that their match reporter for the day, Helen Bexx was doing a fine job with her note book and will hopefully bide well for the Vikings in the coming weeks as no doubt members our supporters club will be offering their services !!
The game started with the ball spending most of its time in midfield with both teams battling well for possession. The Beacon Hill keeper was called upon first to save a shot from Sam which was crafted by some good passing in midfield. Another fine passing move followed with John, Sam and Callum combining really well to produce a cross to the far post which Cameron just couldn’t manage to get on the end of. With 5 mins on the clock however, the Vikings did get the break through their football had deserved when Sam continued his fine goal scoring form with a neat one-two with Cameron which he slotted neatly past the keeper, 1-0. Beacon Hill were not fazed by conceding and were equal to every challenge and began pressing forward themselves. Thankfully John was on hand with some fine defending and a couple of minutes later Luke made his first save of the game. The Vikings responded with some more impressive football but they were definitely not having it all their own way against a resolute Beacon Hill side full of strength and commitment. Midway through the half Callum came close to scoring our first headed goal of the season when a cross from Sam deflected into the air but his header was cleared by the Beacon Hill defence. A number of half chances followed in which Barney hit the side netting and Charlie had a shot saved before it was time for more defensive duties. Charlie done well to clear a Beacon Hill corner and then Daniel and Giorgio both worked well together to stem another Beacon Hill counter attack. Beacon Hill won a free kick mid way in the Vikings half and it was encouraging to see the midfield trio resolutely build the wall with both defenders picking up spare players in the penalty box. The wall done its job and the danger was cleared. Thomas and Barney worked well together which produced a shot from Thomas which the keeper saved. Moments later Thomas collected a long ball and turned his defender magnificently and ascended on goal only for their defender to make a good recovery and just managed to make a tackle as Thomas was about to shoot. Beacon Hill attacked once more and Giorgio read the situation well and produced another fine tackle to clear the danger. The ref blew for half time and the lads enjoyed their oranges while the coaches asked for more of the same football but at a slightly higher tempo.
The second half kicked off with Beacon Hill producing a quick break which Giorgio again extinguished with some great covering play. The Vikings went straight up the other end and won a corner which Cameron delivered and Thomas just hit over the bar. The lads did start to up the tempo as requested with a series of fine moves which was a real joy to watch. With the Vikings searching desperately to double their lead Cameron won the ball in midfield and produced a fine run at goal beating a defender and surging into the box. With the keeper looking to cut down the angle Cameron hit a lovely square ball across the goal where Thomas was waiting but the defender who was tracking back could not avoid helping the ball into the back of the net, 2-0. This gave the lads a new air of confidence and they began producing a number of chances which just couldn’t elude Beacon Hills stand in keeper who was having a magnificent game. Sam hit a free kick which Thomas controlled and laid back to Charlie whose shot was saved and then minutes later Charlie had another screamer of a shot well saved. More fine battling this time in the heart of midfield sent Thomas through on goal for him to unleash an angled shot which looked from the side lines had hit the side netting but as he began his goal celebration it became evident that he had found the back of the net, 3-0. Beacon Hill continued to press whenever possible and a long range effort was well held by Luke with a couple of onrushing forwards hoping for a tap in. John and Giorgio continued to keep things tight at the back before Sam breached the Beacon Hill back line and headed for goal before nestling a fine shot into the bottom corner, 4-0. With the full time whistle imminent it looked like Beacon Hill were going to get a consolation goal with their striker running through on goal. Daniel and Giorgio both had other ideas though and chased back making up ground before they both seemed to time their tackles to perfection to win the ball. The full time whistle then blew ending a great game which was played in tremendous spirit by both teams.
The lads had come up against a strong regimental Beacon Hill side whose league position is really not a true reflection of how they played. The Vikings however kept their shape and continued giving 110% and got their rewards for another good team performance.
Well played lads, another great performance !

14 November 2009 11:00 - Mytchett Athletic Kestrels v Vikings |
|
Mytchett Athletic Kestrels 2 v 7 CPR Vikings
With the Vikings having only just dried out from training on Thursday, everyone was glad that the match had survived the weather and was raring to go, in what were always going to be testing conditions. Although waterproofs and umbrellas were order of the day you could have been excused for thinking you were on the beaches of Brazil as the lads put on a breath taking display of Samba style football.
Within the first few minutes the Vikings created a couple of opportunities but it was Jim who was called upon first to make a save as Mytchett broke in numbers, out numbering Giorgio 3 to 1, and produced a shot which was deflected kindly for Jim to gather. On 8 mins the Vikings won a free kick just outside the penalty box which Sam lined up but hit just over the bar. Barney was enjoying himself on the right side of midfield and was constantly battling for everything that came his way. He was rewarded for his hard work midway through the half when he pushed forward into the box to finish off a great move which was masterminded by Sam, Charlie and Thomas, 1-0. A few minutes later the Vikings nearly doubled their lead when Thomas met a free kick from Sam but his effort was well saved. On 17 mins Mytchett put a good move together down our right flank and cut inside to level the scores, 1-1. Cameron was brought on at right midfield and Barney pushed up front and played some lovely football which resulted in Barney shooting wide. Daniel was bossing the midfield while Sam had a break and was involved in a number of fine passing moves with Charlie and Barney which Mytchett were pleased to clear. Giorgio and Callum were awesome at the back by regimentally holding their positions and mopping up everything every time Mytchett pushed forward. With half time fast approaching the Vikings won a corner which was perfectly delivered by Cameron and met by Daniel on the half volley to nestle into the top corner, 2-1. The half time whistle blew as the weather seemed to worsen and the lads enjoyed their oranges whilst having a quick game of ‘pass the hot water bottle’ with the coaches asking for more of the same.
The second half began at blistering pace with Daniel, Cameron and Barney combining well to create an early chance. A minute later Cameron unleashed a fine shot which looked like finding the top corner before Mytchett’s keeper had other ideas and made a fabulous save. From the resulting corning Callum had pushed forward and had a shot from the edge of the box go wide. Mytchett pushed forward themselves and this time Callum was on hand to produce some fine covering and clear the danger. Cameron was enjoying plenty of space on the right and had a couple of chances in as many minutes with one shot being saved and the other going just wide. The Vikings were not only playing some fine football but were constantly battling for every loose ball with Luke setting a fine example with a number of perfectly timed tackles which set us on another attack. As the ball went forward Thomas dropped deep to retrieve and played a neat one-two with Daniel. As he ran forward a pass out wide looked the best option but he had other ideas as he hit a cracking shot from outside the box which hit the underside of the bar and bounced over the line (no dodgy Russian linesman required), 3-1. The Vikings really were in full flow know and every move seemed to create an opportunity. With Cameron know calling rank on taking our corners Sam decided to enjoy himself by getting on the end of them and scored pretty much two identical goals in the space of 4 minutes with well timed runs to the near post and first time volleys into the bottom corner, 5-1. Mytchett continued to press when they got the opportunity and won a free kick midway into the Vikings half. The Vikings nearly remembered everything they had been taught in training with the wall quickly assembled. What they forgot though was that only the midfielders should be in it and two Mytchett players were left unmarked in the penalty box of which one of them headed the ball past Jim giving him no chance, 5-2. The Vikings regrouped and continued to press which produced another corner. Cameron stepped up and this time rather than be provider hit a curling ball into the box which the keeper could only parry into the roof of the net, 6-2. Luke turned defence into attack yet again with a fine clearance that Thomas met out wide and delivered a lovely cross to Cameron whose shot went inches wide. With only a minute left Thomas again got on the end of a pass, this time from Sam and fought off three defenders before squaring across the box to the on rushing Sam to complete his hat-trick with pretty much the last kick of the game, 7-2.
The travelling army of supporters were sorry to hear the whistle go as the lads had really put on a fine performance. Every player contributed in producing a magnificent team performance which was a plessure to watch.
Well done lads !

07 November 2009 10:15 - U9 Cup 2nd Round -- Inter Milford v Vikings |
|
U9 League Cup 2nd Round
Inter Milford 2 v 4 CPR Vikings (aet)
Cup fever was in the air for the Vikings first ever cup match having had a bye in the first round. The players arrived at Inter wondering if Jose Mourinho may be in town but he obviously had as much trouble as Luke finding the ground as he was nowhere to be seen.
The game kicked off with the Vikings making a good start with both John and Cameron having early chances. On 4 mins the Vikings won a free kick midway in Milfords half which John stepped up to take. A good delivery into the box was thwarted by the hand of a defender and the referee pointed to the spot for our first penalty of the season. Cameron placed the ball on the spot and slotted the ball neatly into the bottom corner, 1-0. A minute later Cameron nearly doubled the lead when he back heeled a cross in from the right only for the keeper to save on the line. The Vikings continued to press and were enjoying plenty of possession but Milford were looking dangerous on the times they counter attacked. Daniel and Charlie worked well down the left but the cross eluded everyone at the far post and sailed out for a goal kick. Giorgio and Luke were holding a good line at the back with Luke making a tremendous headed clearance on 11 mins. The game went a bit quiet midway through the half until Milford attacked menacingly and created an opportunity which their striker controlled and hit from the edge of the box into the top corner giving Jim no chance, 1-1. Thomas, Sam and Barney were introduced on 17 mins and Giorgio was called upon to make a good clearance a minute later. Barney settled straight into right midfield and he played a lovely through ball to Cameron who had his shot saved. More good possession from the Vikings followed and Thomas had pushed forward to pick up a loose ball outside the box and rifled in a shot that went over the bar. The Vikings began to dominate but without creating too many clear cut chances with Milford defending valiantly. Sam found himself in space to hit a shot from just outside the box but their keeper was glad to see it go wide. From the goal kick Cameron had positioned himself perfectly to pick up the ball in plenty of space but the half time whistle blew just as he was about to get his shot away.
The second half began in similar fashion to the first with the Vikings winning an early corner which fell to Giorgio but he shot wide. On 29 mins Milford won possession in midfield and pushed forward with a couple of crisp passes which fell to their striker who had found space in the penalty box to give Milford the lead, 2-1. The Vikings looked a bit shell shocked at first but regained their composure to go searching for an equalizer. More good work by Daniel down the left found Barney in a good position but his shot went into the side netting. Another good move was saved by the Milford keeper and it looked like it was going to be one of those days. With the clock ticking away Thomas had pushed forward again to hit another fierce shot which was blocked in the penalty box with some more valiant defending but John was first to react and followed up with another shot through a crowd of players which found its way into the back of the net, 2-2.
The tension was growing as the game became very stretched with Milford leaving an attacker routed in our penalty box which gave Thomas and Luke something to think about at the back. We still continued to press and John saw another shot go narrowly wide with Milford eager to break forward from the goal kick at every opportunity. With the heavy pitch taking its toll on the lads you knew a goal from any side would be enough to win it know with only minutes left on the clock. Barney pushed forward and hit another fine shot but the keeper made another good save. The referee blew full for time and extra time beckoned.
With no one being too sure of the rules, including the ref, Giles flicked through the rule book to see how long we had to play. With the ref happy to play 8 mins each way Giles eventually found the page and informed it that it was only 5 mins. The travelling supporters were looking tense and dreading the thought of the game being decided on penalties.
The lads however, having had a short rest were chomping at the bit to get back out there. The game restarted and Daniel immediately pounced on a loose ball which was nestling into the bottom left had corner when the Milford keeper pounced from nowhere to make another fantastic save by pushing it just round the post. The next chance fell to John but again solid defending kept the Vikings at bay. With 4 mins gone more good play from the Vikings resulting in another shot be handled in the Milford penalty which the referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot. Talk about double decker buses, you wait all season for one then two come along at once. Sam grabbed the ball and no one was going to argue as he placed the ball on the spot. A short run up and a fine shot followed as he hit the ball perfectly to nearly rip a hole in the net, 3-2. There was time for one last chance in the first half which ending up with John finding the side netting.
The half time whistle blew with the teams changing straight round with Charlie, Giorgio and Thomas returning to the fray. Milford where still fighting relentlessly and on 7 mins breached the Vikings defense and sent their lone striker through on goal who must have been 10 yards clear inside our half. Giorgio chased back with incredible pace and managed to make a fine tackle on the edge of the box with the striker just ready to pull the trigger. Jim gathered and cleared our lines to create more pressure up the other end. Thomas had a shot blocked and had another run into the box cleared by some last ditch defending with us happy to stay pegged in the Milford half. With 2 mins left Charlie made a good run down the left leaving two players in his wake to see another fine cross hit a defenders hand. Surely not having had two penalties already but again the ref pointed immediately to the spot. Sam did have some competition this time but was ordered from the sidelines to take the kick. Again, another powerful shot flew past the keeper to the sound of a massive sigh of relief from the travelling spectators. The full time whistle blew and the Vikings had made it through to the next round.
Although we were the stronger team it was hard on Milford who had played their hearts out and were a credit to their club.
The Vikings however had experienced a taste of a real typical cup tie in which they came through valiantly by keeping their heads and continuing to play the football they play so well.
Well done lads !

31 October 2009 10:30 - Vikings v Petersfield Town Tigers |
|
CPR Vikings 7 – 2 Petersfield Town Tigers
“We’ll get started as soon as we’ve blown up the goals” advised Colin to an unsuspecting parent who looked somewhat bewildered as to why the coach should want to destroy the posts, bar and netting before a ball had been kicked. Alas, this was no pyromaniac conspiracy or premature celebration of the gun powder plot. Instead it was an introduction to the use of our new inflatable goals. All was not going to be as predictable today as the Vikings switched venue for their home fixture to Lightwater Country Park to take advantage of a bigger pitch. The kick off was also pushed back to 10:30 to allow Petersfield the extra journey time to travel up from their home somewhere south of the Madrid!
After a strong warm up that involved numerous excursions into the brambles to retrieve balls, the lads gathered round for the pre-match team talk. Playing on a bigger pitch means letting the ball do the work, find space and width and ultimately play to the Vikings’ strength of teamwork and passing.
The game kicked off on time and it was clear from the early exchanges that Petersfield Tigers had not just shown up to make up the numbers. After an even opening 3 minutes Charlie found space out wide on the left. His cross into the box was only half cleared to Sam who controlled before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the corner for an early lead. 1-0.
Stung by the early set back, the Tigers played some neat football in midfield before sending a pass through that Giorgio anticipated brilliantly to cut out the danger.
Working the ball out of defence, John found Sam and some great interchange of passes between Thomas, Barnie and back to Sam led to half a chance that was well blocked by a defender.
A quick fly kick from the Tigers’ keeper saw the ball bounce and the Vikings retreating before conceding a corner. As the ball was crossed in it seemed to be heading out. Unfortunately, rather than playing safe and clearing the danger the ball was left and it stayed in play rolling across the goal before a Tigers’ boot directed it over the line. 1-1.
The equaliser stunned the Vikings and seemed to take the wind out of their square sails (important Viking ship history point – ed). Losing the ball from the kick off, the Vikings were forced back with the Tigers playing the ball through their midfield putting pressure on the Vikings back line. A corner was quickly conceded, and from the cross the ball was only half cleared. Failing to close down the striker a shot came in that cleared heads and was well beyond Jim’s reach before hitting the net. 1-2.
With only 8 minutes gone and having enjoyed the balance of possession, this was clearly going to be a test of character for the Vikings.
From the kick off the Vikings re-grouped and retained possession this time. Moving the ball well across midfield using the full width of the pitch Charlie again found space on the left playing an early ball into Thomas up front. Thomas evaded his marker and made space for a great shot that was superbly saved by the Tigers’ keeper. The Vikings were quick to win back the ball and again some great work in midfield between Sam, Barnie and Charlie led to a dangerous cross in from Sam that Thomas looked certain to connect with until the keeper bravely foiled.
The next 3 minutes saw the Vikings up the pressure. The passing across midfield and intelligent running down the flanks brought an audible purr from the home crowd. This was the football the coaches had been working towards and now the boys were really beginning to deliver. Confidence was rising and after being camped inside the Tigers’ half for 5 minutes, the Vikings finally got their reward when Thomas was the most alert in pouncing on a half clearance to deservedly level the scores. 2-2.
From the kick off the Tigers reminded the Vikings to be on constant vigil against the break when a ball once again almost found its way through before running out. Jim found Charlie with a strong goal kick and Charlie took off on a mazy run before cutting inside and shooting only to see the keeper parry the ball round the post for a corner. Sam delivered a well flighted centre for Barnie who timed his run to perfection to score at the far post and put the Vikings back in front. 3-2.
The game was only 15 minutes old and already there had been 5 goals. After 17 minutes Barnie and Giorgio took a well-earned rest and made way for Cameron and Daniel respectively. By the end of the first half the Vikings would have accumulated 10 corners and had more than 16 efforts on goal with Sam, Thomas, Charlie, Cameron and even John coming up from defence going close with shots. Yet somehow the score remained 3-2 at half time.
The Vikings knew the game was for the taking but needed to convert their chances. In fairness, the Tigers were defending brilliantly and their keeper was having a blinding game.
The second half started at an incredible pace with the Vikings taking up from where they left off. It was one way traffic from the off and Sam had an early shot well saved by the keeper (again!). 3 corners in quick succession saw shots raining in on the Tigers goal but with no reward. After the 7th corner in as many minutes the Tigers struggled to clear their ranks and Thomas was able to get his foot on the ball in a goal line scramble to edge the Vikings further ahead. 4-2.
Regaining possession immediately from kick off, Sam set Cameron away down the right who played the ball back inside before Sam shot low and hard just missing the far post with the keeper beaten. From the ensuing goal kick Thomas was quick to seize on confusion in the Tigers’ defence and having won possession of the ball looked up from all of 15 yards out to strike the ball into the bottom right hand corner to net his first league hat trick of the season. 5-2.
John and Daniel were beginning to play further up field as there was little to do for the defence as the Vikings continued to dominate. Cameron was enjoying himself out wide on the right and went on a great run beating three players before squaring the ball back inside to Barnie who netted his second with style. 6-2.
The Vikings were now really turning on the style and it was champagne football bubbling from every area of the pitch. With the Tigers pinned back deep into their own half, another sortie forwards was quashed by what was, despite the scoreline, a really resolute and able defence. As the ball was cleared it fell to Daniel in an advanced position who picked it up and from around 20 yards out looked up and needed no second thought as he set himself to curl a shot high into the top left corner that would not have been out of place in the Premiership (possibly with the exception of Upton Park of course!). 7-2.
With the Vikings at full throttle it did seem that there would be more goals. Sam set off on a jinking run in the 40th minute, played a one-two with Cameron and struck a superb effort that was heading into the back of the net until a little defender’s head popped up to deflect it wide. From the corner Sam delivered another great cross that foiled everyone before hitting the base of the post and refused to cross the line.
With final substitutions made and John and Sam taking a deserved break, the Vikings continued to push for more goals, but not before Jim had to descend from his improvised hammock to thwart a rare Tigers attack. Again Jim’s distribution was good and the Vikings were quick to turn defence into attack. From Cameron’s cross the ball bounced invitingly for Barn with his back to goal to try an overhead kick that the keeper once again got across well to save. The Tigers keeper was called into action twice more before the end of the match to prevent Barn and Charlie adding to the score. Full time 7-2.
What a game. What a performance. Absolutely outstanding against a team whose league position does not do them justice. This was a hard fought victory that raised the bar in terms of performance and demonstrated a brilliant level of concentration and growing maturity from a young bunch of lads who are increasingly showing that they are going to be major players in the title race. More importantly though, the attitude and application of every single player is a credit to them all, playing fairly and with a smile that makes coaches and parents so proud. It’s also so much more entertaining than watching my Sky Blues grinding it out in the Championship!
Well done lads – Immense!

17 October 2009 09:30 - Vikings v Mytchett Athletic Kestrels |
|
CPR Vikings 3 v 2 Mytchett Athletic Kestrels
It had the feeling of an away game about it while travelling to Connaught for the first time this season, but on arrival, realizing we had to put up the goals for the first time this season that ‘home’ feeling soon set in. With our pitch being by far the smallest we’ve played on this season we knew that it would be another tight game against an unbeaten Mytchett side that had recently joined the Premier division.
The game kicked off with both teams finding it hard to find space and most and the ball spending most of the time in the midfield area. The Vikings did create the first chance of the game but Giorgio’s shot went wide. Mytchett took 5 mins to create their first chance which ended up in the back of the net following some good work down the left flank, 0-1. The Vikings look startled as the goal came out of nothing and kicked off with a sense of determination to get back on level terms. On winning a free kick straight from the restart Sam took control and only had one thing on his mind. A cracking shot from 20 yards was parried by the keeper but no one was on hand to knock in the rebound. A minute later, following a good move by the Vikings the ball came out to Sam who had another fine shot rattle back off the bar but this time Cameron was on hand to knock in the rebound and bring the score level, 1-1. This inspired the Vikings and they began to enjoy the majority of possession with some effortless battling by all the lads. With us winning a corner on 10 mins Sam floated in a lovely ball which Cameron met at the far post but headed inches wide. Charlie was again enjoying himself in midfield and battled really well to chase back and win back possession. Although John was playing at right back the small pitch allowed him to get forward an unleash a shot from the edge of the box which nearly gave us the lead. On 15 mins a lack of concentration at the back gave Mytchett an opportunity to take the lead which they fortunately squandered. Jim was enjoying himself on pitch for the first game this season and was on hand to make a couple of consecutive clearances with Mytchett looking dangerous again. Thomas, Daniel and Callum were all introduced to the game on 17 mins and had an immediate effect as within a minute Charlie knocked a lovely ball up to Thomas who run at goal, beat his defender and hit a left foot shot that gave the keeper no chance, 2-1. Mytchett tried to hit back immediately and Luke, who had taken the keepers jersey for the day was called on to make a great save. Great covering from Daniel on the right of midfield won possession which developed into a good move which was nearly converted by Thomas and Charlie but was finally cleared by some last ditch Mytchett defending. More good football down the right flank produced another chance on the stroke of half time which Charlie hit just over the bar. The ref blew for half time and the Vikings had a well earned break.
The Vikings kicked off the second half with a sense of urgency and produced a second half display which was truly outstanding. In the first minute Daniel fired in another fine ball which Thomas just failed to get his toe on. A minute later good work from a throw-in allowed Charlie to head a ball square to Thomas who’s shot went narrowly wide. Although the Vikings were firmly on top, Mytchett were prone to counter attack in numbers but Callum and Jim were alert on a number of occasions to clear any danger and begin another Vikings attack. Cameron was working well in the middle of the park and having won the ball created space to produce an effort on goal which went just wide. Charlie looked like he was going to increase our lead with a run and shot from the left hand flank which was somehow cleared over the bar by a Mytchett defender. Cameron took the corner and the Vikings just couldn’t get through some last ditch defending by Mytchett. The Mytchett goal was basically under siege for the following 5 minutes with the post and bar taking a battering. Thomas and Charlie both had shots bounce back off the post with Daniel nearly getting on the end of Charlies and Sam also whipped in a corner which went across the front of the bar. It felt like we were never going to get a third but with Giorgio back on the right of midfield met a cross field ball magnificently to bury a shot into the top corner which gave the Mytchett keeper no chance, 3-1. On 42 mins the Vikings produced the best move of the game with a breath taking move with Giorgio passing to Daniel who passed to Sam who knocked in to Thomas who hit a first time shot that was curling towards the far post but went just over. Mytchett were not giving up and themselves produced a break which looked like they were going to narrow the deficit but Luke produced another superb point blank save. Although John and Callum were now working well together in defence, Mytchett did make it a nervous last couple of minutes when they knocked a ball into the box to their centre forward who took his chance well to give Luke no chance of saving, 3-2. Surely the Vikings weren’t going to surrender another lead and end up with a draw which would have be truly unjustified. The ref blew for full time to the relief of the supporters and coaches with the Vikings running out worthy winners.
Well played lads, another great performance !

10 October 2009 10:00 - Wey Valley Warriors v CPR Vikings |
|
Wey Valley Warriors 0 v 1 CPR Vikings
With the Vikings not having a game last week they were hungry to get their first win of the season, but knew they were in for another tough encounter against a Wey Valley team that provided such tough opposition last season.
The game started in a frantic sort of manner with the lads battling ferociously in the middle of the park. On 4 mins we advanced into the Warriors penalty box for the first time and were rewarded with our first corner of the game. Sam crossed a lovely ball into the box but nobody could get on the end of it and it sailed across the box to the relief of the Warriors defense. A few minutes later the Vikings won a free-kick midway into the Warriors half which was quickly taken between Sam and Thomas to cause another threat in the Warriors defense. The game began to switch from end to end with everyone working hard for each other and showing real commitment in winning back possession. Charlie was utilizing the space on the left flank and produced a great run into the box which resulted in another corner. Barney was working his socks off up front by chasing back when necessary and forcing the Warriors into surrendering possession. Midway through the first half the Vikings cleared their lines only for the Warriors to knock the ball back into a crowded penalty box which was headed just over the bar. The Vikings attacked again with Callum working well with Barney but we were just missing that final ball through the Warriors defence. Daniel was now on in the middle of midfield and was unfortunate to see his ball through to Charlie cleared to safety. The game was really even at this stage and the Warriors were looking dangerous when they pushed forward with some great movement off the ball keeping the Vikings on their toes. With Jim being called on to make his first real save of the game he then had a succession of saves which he dealt with immaculately. The Vikings attacked again with Barney showing he hasn’t lost any of his pace with a great run down the right and nearly found Charlie who made a great run into the box. The half time whistle blew on what was a really great half.
The second half began with the Warriors fast out of the blocks but Giorgio was on hand to make a good interception and clear to safety and Jim made another fine save a minute later. The Warriors seemed to have a head of steam on and a shot from just outside the box looked like it was going to break the deadlock but fortunately ended up nestling into the hedgerow rather than the net.
It was now the Vikings turn to enjoy their share of possession but another through ball was hit to hard and run through to the keeper. Luke won possession with some fine defending and knocked a lovely ball to John who’s cross was cleared for a corner. The Vikings created a succession of chances with Barney having a shot saved and a long range effort from Daniel going just wide. With the Vikings really showing some real character with the football they were playing they were rewarded midway through the second half when John crossed a great ball to Callum, who was now playing up front, who neatly controlled the ball and steered past the keeper to break the deadlock, 1-0.
The Vikings nearly doubled their lead a minute later when Daniel went on a run but shot just wide. Although the Warriors were trying valiantly to get an equalizer the Vikings continued to play some really great stuff and if that final ball had been a bit better could easily have had three or four. The Warriors continued in search of an equalizer until the final minutes but Thomas and Luke were holding their positions well at the back and were on hand to clear any danger.
With the spectators hoping that the ref wasn’t going to play too much ‘fergie time’ the full time whistle blew to give the Vikings a really well earned victory.
A really magnificent all round team performance lads !

26 September 2009 10:30 - Vikings v Aldershot Town Reds match report |
| CPR Vikings 1 v 5 Aldershot Town Reds
First half
Curley Park Vikings are ready to take on Aldershot at Lightwater in a home match. After the boys having a good warm up the positions were set, Jim in goal, Luke at right-back, John at left back, Cameron in right midfield, Daniel in left midfield, Sam centre midfield and Barnaby up front.
The match started at 10:35. We got to start but they soon took procession of the ball, luckily Daniel made a brilliant clearance. Cameron got the ball and was playing really well. The boys were battling really hard in which we knew would be a tough game. Aldershot again managed to take possession and headed towards the goal but Jim made a brilliant clearance up the pitch.
Barnaby, as sly as a fox slipped the ball down the pitch but was unfortunately tackled. The ball got close to our goal but thanks to Jim and our strong defence they didn’t score.
At this point the ball was end to end like a tennis ball but ended in Aldershot’s half. Cameron made a brilliant cross into Sam who with Cameron worked well together but couldn’t score.
Aldershot managed to ease the ball into our half and score a goal to make it 1-0.
From the kick off there was great play from Barnaby, Sam and Daniel. There was brilliant football all-round. There was a close goal from Sam delivering a great corner into Daniel but it skimmed the post. We couldn’t seem to get it in the back of the net.
At 10:51 we made a substitution, Cameron came off and Thomas went on, Sam came off and Charlie went on and Luke came off and Callum went on. As soon as he stepped onto the pitch Callum was tracking his player like a hound. There was more great team work from Barnaby and Thomas.
There was great pressure, we made another substitution, Daniel came off and Sam went on. The referee blew for half time at 10:57.
The boys had been playing really well. The ref seemed to have cut the first half short with it being only 20 minutes. Aldershot had a 1-0 lead but we had hopes that we’d win it back. Overall the defending was particularly great.
Second half
The second half started at 11:02 and Aldershot kicked off, as soon as the whistle blew the Vikings got straight in there and won possession. They were battling really well. Thomas was straight in there and was battling really well and he got the ball and crossed into Barnaby who shot and scored the well deserved equaliser, we were still in it.
John and Sam were putting on pressure and battling really well. Sam and Charlie were doing really well and were unfortunate to get tackled.
The ball once again made its way into the back of the net for Aldershot to make it 2-1. The game restarted and Aldershot soon got the ball past our defence and Jim to find the back of the net to make it 3-1, we were clearly slacking and had to tighten up the screws.
The boys were trying their hardest. Charlie played really well. We made another substitution, John came off and Luke went on and Barnaby came off and Cameron went on.
Aldershot managed to slip in another goal to make it 4-1 but the boys strongly didn’t give up hope.
From the kick off Charlie got the ball and made a beautiful cross into Thomas who was extremely unfortunate to see his shot go wide.
Luke was playing brilliantly as were the whole team. Charlie was battling really well as were Cameron and Thomas. We again made a substitution, Sam came off and Daniel went on.
Daniel was straight in there with Thomas and Charlie and with some great teamwork they got past the defence but again couldn’t find the target. Charlie was on fire, he got the ball again and took a shot which went wide.
There was good pressure from Luke, but again Aldershot managed to weave past our defence and score yet another goal to make it 5-1, we prayed there would be no more goals and the boys stayed strong.
Luke was doing brilliantly he was keeping his position well. Aldershot got to the goal but not this time, Jim made a fine save and booted it up the pitch. Charlie made a run for it but the referee blew for full time. It was a disappointing score but the boys walked away with their heads held high.
To give credit to Aldershot their defence was brilliant but with the chances we had we deserved at least another goal. In all fairness the score wasn’t really a true reflection on the game but we came up against a strong organised team today.
The spectators’ Man of the Match was Sam and the coaches ‘Player of the Week’ was Callum.
Personally I thought all the boys deserved the man of the match for their commitment to the game and their team, well done boys!!!

CPR Vikings 3 – 3 Alton United
FIRST HALF
It was less than 24 hours before our away match against Alton when the Vikings heard that the pitches weren’t ready to use so we had to have a home game at Lightwater fitness centre. The day of the game all the boys were eager to get going.
After intense training Colin set the positions. Jim in goal, Charlie in left back, Callum in right back, Cameron in right midfield, Daniel in centre midfield, Luke in left midfield, Thomas up front and the three subs were Giorgio, John and Barnaby.
Alton won the toss to take kick-off. The match started at 10:42 and we tackled the ball immediately and within minutes Thomas scored a stunner with the help from Cameron who set him up. There was great teamwork from Daniel and Cameron.
In the 10th minute they managed to slip past our defence and it was down to Jim who managed to make a brilliant stop and saved us for now. Jim booted it down the pitch to Cameron who crossed it into Daniel but unfortunately Alton intercepted it and it went out to a corner. Cameron took the corner and second time lucky Daniel scored a marvelous goal to make it 2-0!!
We again took possession of the ball and Callum was battling well. Cameron managed to get free who passed to Thomas. Thomas took a shot but it was unlucky and it hit the crossbar.
A couple of minutes later we got a free kick because of a handball. Callum took the free kick and after a couple of good passes we had a good chance to score but we were unlucky. The goalie was on the ground crawling to get the ball there was great teamwork from Alton and they managed to keep the ball out somehow.
Alton got the ball and managed to slip past the defence but Jim again made a brilliant save.
Just after 11:00 Collin made a substitution. Daniel, Charlie and Thomas came off and john, Barnaby and Giorgio went on.
Unfortunately only minutes later Alton got an uncalled for free kick and it was a near goal luckily Jim made an immense save.
Jim booted it up the pitch to Luke and he scored a beautiful goal!!
Alton’s kick off and it was passed straight to John who battled really well and made an excellent cross but unfortunately the goalkeeper caught it.
The whistle blew for HALF TIME at 11:07. The boys had been helping each other out really well and Jim had made a few excellent saves. We had good possession throughout the first half. There was one time where we opened up and a player slipped through. We had to work on our throw ins though but it was overall a great first half with really nice weather!!

Luke and Cameron took a well earned break for the start of the second half. The second half started at 11:15. There was great marking the boys were trying their absolute hardest. John got the ball and made a brilliant run and made a cross but was unfortunately intercepted. At 11:20 Giorgio got a free kick for a bad tackle. Giorgio took it well. Callum and John used great teamwork together but were tackled. Barnaby took an attempt but was unsuccessful. But minutes later Alton scored!!
To the kick off and Alton’s momentum kicked up a notch and they managed to intercept the ball again and Giorgio did marvelous in defence and tried his best. But unfortunately Alton managed to slip another goal as the boys battled and battled. We made another substitution and tried again to shoot but it was an unfortunate miss.
Alton got the ball just outside the area when the referee blew for a free kick. Alton took it and it was a really good shot they were successful and got a goal equalizing it to 3-3.
With only minutes to go it was extremely tense! There was great play from Barnaby and John. We made another sub and John came off. With only seconds to go Cameron hit a stunning shot on target but he was extremely unlucky and it was hit away. The whistle blew for full time and the match ended at 11:42 with a draw - 3-3.
The boys put their heart and soul into the match they didn’t give up and just kept battling on. They were very unfortunate to draw once again. They marked so well and played amazingly. “Keep it up boys and you will succeed”
